This just may be me this afternoon. That is, if I can work up enough courage to go do this. Two days ago I went to bed fine and woke up with a very painful right hip. I was hoping I had just slept on it funny and it would go away, so I went about my daily activities normally. I worked out like always during the kids nap-time and it felt a little worse. Then after pounding it out on the treadmill (I know, I know- terrible idea) at the gym that night it felt terrible. So here I am this morning, with my sub coming so that I have a half day of work, yet am unable to use that time to get a great workout in. This is where the swimming comes in. It's a low-impact exercise that won't affect my joints. It's a big deal for me though for a number of reasons.
1. The pool is at a different YMCA that I have never been to, and when I am used to the comfort of my own gym with all these people who know me, it's just a little bit scary.
2. I own bikinis, bikinis, aaaaand a monokini. Absolutely no swimwear appropriate for swimming laps. Solution: borrow?
3. I am a terrible swimmer. I am sure that after lap two I will already be resembling someone that should be in the beginner classes in the shallow end of the pool.
4. I have no goggles and I hate water in my eyes. Especially with contacts. Maybe I should take them out to swim? But then I will be blind. I mean BLIND
5. I have no swim cap and I just washed my hair last night (It doesn't need washed all that often) and I hate to have to go through the process and drying again.
Aside from all these things, I am actually a little excited about changing up my routine and I know swimming is a really great way to get a work-out in. If I had have known about this ahead of time, here are some swimsuits that I would be interested in purchasing to better fit in with the athletic swim look.
Here's to hoping it's not a stress fracture!!
JORDAN
Hey Jordan! This is Natalie Buroker Evans. I'm a swimmer, and I have tons of tips for you if you'd like them! Are you going to the downtwon Y?
ReplyDeleteI too have contacts and hate feeling "blind." So, I swim with them in and with goggles. I've only lost a contact once, but I buy good goggles. To test out goggles before you buy them, stick them too your face in the store, they should hold some suction and stay on your face for at least a few seconds.
Also, wear a swim cap. Get your hair wet in the shower pre-pool. Then, put a little hair conditioner in your hair to protect it. Then apply swim cap. I prefer the slightly more expensive silicone cap because it doesnt pull or damage my hair so bad.
Also, the Y used to have an Adult Swim Team, it's a great way to learn and observe some adult swimmers, they'd probably be happy to teach you the strokes. Or, ask the lifeguard if they know of any swim classes. I know a particular sister of mine who might be able to teach you a thing or two as well!
Goood luck! :))
Thanks Natalie! I really appreciate it- I'm definitely a novice swimmer, but need to try out something with low-impact for awhile. I am going to the downtown Y, and hoping to have a good experience; your tips will definitely help!!
